————  —— ———–

Today I’m with Marley Rose McClain from To Catch a Texas Star.

She’s a fascinating woman and I’m going to see if she will tell us a few things about the book. She strides into the room with confidence, a striking woman with dark hair and eyes. I see strength and pride in the way she carries herself and can’t wait to hear what she has to say.

Me: What did you think when you found Roan Penny lying half-dead beside the road?

Marley: I thought he was dead at first. Scared me when he moved. So I got him in the back of the wagon and drove back to the ranch. I think if he’d lain there much longer he would’ve died.

Me: I hear Roan stole your heart, and frankly he stole mine too.

Marley’s eyes sparkle: I tell you, that man makes me swoon. He’s sure handsome with dark brown hair and twinkling gray eyes. He’s quite the kisser too. When his lips meet mine, I get all hot and fluttery inside. He’s tall and lean too. I just love a man who makes me feel so protected and cherished and when he calls me his Texas star, I just melt.

Me: What was he like when he was dealing with that mob that murdered his friend?

Marley: Those gray eyes can sure turn to ice to match his voice when he’s angry. I found out Roan Penny can strike the fear of God in a man, but you know that’s what it took in the old west. More often than not, justice was only what men found for themselves. Criminals and bad men far outnumbered lawmen back then.

Me: Let’s talk about the secret Duel and Jessie kept from you. How did you feel?

Marley: I was deeply hurt, confused, and angry that they let me believe I was their child all these years. I couldn’t fathom being won in a poker game. Did I mean so little? But then I came to see that I meant so much. Duel saved me. If not for him, I wouldn’t be sitting here today. Even as hurt as I was, I couldn’t hate him. But for a while there, I didn’t know who I was anymore.

Me: Tell me about little Matthew and him calling you Mama Rose.

Marley grins big: That sweet, little boy has stolen my heart. He’s so sensitive and worries about everyone. The smallest things make him happy and the best part of my day is reading to him at bedtime.

Me: Speaking of that, I hear you write children’s stories and you read your own work to Matthew.

Marley: That’s correct. Writing stories that bring the children such enjoyment brings me great satisfaction and joy. The reward is seeing their faces light up.

Well, that’s all the time we had. I thanked Marley and left. She has an incredible story to tell in To Catch a Texas Star. It’s out now so grab a copy. I think you’ll like it.

Linda is a New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of full length historical western romance novels and novellas. The love of this state and its people runs bone deep and she instills that into each book she writes. She sets all her stories in Texas because of the rich history and interesting people.

A mother, grandmother, and soon to be a great grandmother, Linda finds research fascinating and always looks for little known tidbits to add realism to her stories. When she’s not writing, she collects old coins and confesses to being a rock hound in addition to making herself a nuisance at museums, libraries, and historical places which inspire her.

Interview: Vivienne Lorret, author of HOW TO FORGET A DUKE {giveaway}

interview (1)

Where did your love of books/storytelling/reading/writing/etc. come from?

I come from a long line of storytellers, all gathered around a huge harvest table at my grandparents’ house. On Sundays (when I was a child), my dad and uncles would tell story after story of all the mischief they got into when they were younger. As a young spy in training (my chosen profession at the time), I was a stealthy eavesdropper and found myself enthralled (and sometimes horrified) by their tales. Even so, I was hooked. A child story-addict. I guess I never outgrew it.

What do you like to read in your free time?

Romantic comedies, mysteries, poetry, nutrition labels (I always have a good laugh over those), and the Starbucks menu.

What projects are you working on at the present?

I’m currently writing my 2019 release (book #3 in the Misadventures in Matchmaking series), tentatively titled THE ROGUE TO RUIN.

In addition, I’m putting together a proposal for a sub character in a previous book. I’ve received a slew of emails from readers, asking for Lord Holt’s book (he appeared in the novella, Just Another Viscount in Love). It’s such a wonderful blessing!

What do your plans for future projects include?

This December, TEN KISSES TO SCANDAL (book #2 of the Misadventures in Matchmaking series) will be available. And in October, I’ll be hosting a table at the Buns & Roses Tea for Literacy at the Hyatt in Richardson, Texas. So exciting!

Fun Stuff…

Do you have any strange writing habits (like standing on your head or writing in the shower)?

Well, I don’t think it’s strange, but I typically wear a black sweater (my son calls it my “writing cloak”), and I start off my day with two big mugs of chai tea. I’ve also been known to partake in the sacrificial ritual of the scone, on occasion.

What is your go-to method for getting rid of hiccups?

Holding my breath while drinking water in a bent over position, from the opposite side of the glass. Works every time.

If I gave you a pencil and piece of paper and told you to draw something funny, what would you draw?

I’d probably write the words “something funny” next to a smiley face. : )

Do you have a favorite Girl Scout Cookie?

Thin mints, fresh or frozen.

Finally, and this one is important, so please pay attention What do you think cats dream about?

World domination.

This or That?

Tea or Coffee?  Tea, always.

Winter or Summer? Fall

TexMex or Italian? Italian

Chocolate or Vanilla?  There is only chocolate. What is this “vanilla” you mentioned?

Bond or Bourne? Bourne

Writers Need to have A Short Memory: Dealing with Rejection.

Stand around a group of writers and, at some point, a conversation about dealing with rejection will pop up. It doesn’t matter how “thick” your skin is, rejection hurts. And some hurt worse than others. Whether it’s a review, critique, answers to query letter, or in the editing process, someone along the journey isn’t going to like something, and they’re sure to tell you all about it.

One of my more notable experiences with rejection came straight from a writing contest I had entered. I was over the moon when I found out my story had made it into the top three, and had been sent to an acquiring editor. The sweet news soon soured when I opened the final critique I had looked forward to reading. As part of that critique, the editor chose to express her opinion that I should “never put pen to paper ever again.” That comment, and the rest of the comments that particular professional editor sent, wasn’t helpful in my pursuit to become a better writer. They weren’t constructive. They were meant to hurt, and at that moment, that editor definitely succeeded in crushing my spirit.

I’ll be brutally honest. I cried. I considered starting a bonfire in my backyard and burning every note, article, drawing I’d ever put on paper, even the love poems I’d written to my husband. I almost deleted every document on my computer that I’d ever written. If I’d taken that person’s advice, my writing life, something that had been an escape, a love, a sacred place, would have ended that day.

Instead of letting those scathing words defeat me, I took a sports analogy to heart and left the past in the past. It is often said that defensive backs in football have to have a short memory and be able to focus on the future. They get burned for a touchdown on one play, but have to be able to shut down the next pass that comes their way.  Authors have to be the same way. Take criticism one day. Begin a best seller the next.

My writing juices got ignited. I didn’t care how long it took, or how many heart-stopping rejections I got along the way, I was determined to make the next play.

I worked on the craft of writing, enlisted some trusted professionals who wanted to see me succeed, and didn’t let any rejections that came my way break me.

Defensive backs work hard, learn from every play, and have a short memory. I choose that approach in my writing career and in life. Join me and forget about those rejections, work hard every day, and never, never, never give up.

Interview: Prescott Lane, author of TO THE FALL

interview (1)

Why did you choose to write in your particular field or genre?

I write romance because I love a good happily ever after, and there arent enough in real life.

Where did your love of books/storytelling/reading/writing/etc. come from?

My dad is a big reader, so probably from him.

How long have you been writing?

I started writing fiction as soon as I could hold a pencil. Ive always had characters living in my head. I sold my first story about a talking turtle to my dad for a quarter.

What kind(s) of writing do you do?

I write Contemporary Romance.

What cultural value do you see in writing/reading/storytelling/etc.?

Unity. Love, heartbreak, triumph are parts of all our lives. These are the things that tie us together.

Are there underrepresented groups or ideas featured if your book? If so, discuss them.

To the Fall does have some underrepresented ideas in it, but I cant give them away. Spoiler-free!

What did you find most useful in learning to write? What was least useful or most destructive?

The most useful thing Ive found is to listen to your characters. They drive the book. It doesnt matter what my plan is for a story. It always seems to change in the writing process. Embrace it dont fight it.

What do you like to read in your free time?

It changes, but mysteries are my favorite right now.

Do you have any strange writing habits (like standing on your head or writing in the shower)?

My laptop, my dogs, and a quiet place are my usual mode of operation, but ideas can strike me anytime. Ive been known to frantically scribble on napkins or scraps of paper if an idea hits me. And yes, Ive been known to rush out of the shower to jot something down!

What book do you wish you could have written?

A cookbook! Im a so-so cook. I have to have a recipe to make anything beyond the basics. So I really wish I had the ability to come up with new recipes.

If you could cast your characters in the Hollywood adaptation of your book, who would play your characters?

I would have to cast Henry Cavill just so I could stare at him on set all day. That man is too handsome.

How important are names to you in your books? Do you choose the names based on liking the way it sounds or the meaning? Do you have any name choosing resources you recommend?

Names are very important. Their meaning, the mood they invoke, is all very important. In my book, The Reason for Me, the heroines name is eight letters long. A couple chapters in, I was sick of typing it, so I clicked find alland changed her name to a three letter one. I couldnt sleep all night long. I had to get up at 3 in the morning and change it back.

If you had a superpower, what would it be?

Hmm, Im not sure if this is a superpower, but Id like to be able to heal the sick.

Where is one place you want to visit that you haven’t been before?

Its hard to narrow it to one. Probably Scotland or France.

If you were an animal in a zoo, what would you be?

My daughter loves polar bears, so I have to pick that.

If you could have any accents from anywhere in the world, what would you choose?

I love a British accent!

Aboutthebook (1)

TO THE FALL_Amazon_KOBO_iBooks
You know the story.
Boy meets girl, they fall in love, two kids, white picket fence.
This isn’t that story.
This is more like . . .
Man meets woman.  Man sleeps with woman.
Man meets another woman, sleeps with her.
And so on.  You get the idea.
I own a small boutique hotel in New Orleans, the Kingston.  I’ve seen men do some stupid stuff in the name of the woman they love, or at least the woman they love for the night.
That’s not me.  I’m always in control.  You’d be surprised how much you can get away with on just good manners and a smile. It’s the only way to keep my secrets safely locked away.
And my smile hides a lot.  Until her.
She turns me down flat.  Playing hard to get is my favorite game.  It’s the thrill of the chase.
Only problem is, I think it’s me that’s getting caught.

Guest Post: Mia Hopkins, author of THIRSTY

gp (1)

Writing from the Hero’s Point of View

One day passes, then two, then three. I work myself hard at both my jobs. I exercise until my body has no energy left to feed my anxiety. In the mirror at the gym, the man staring back at me with the furious eyes is bigger and leaner than anyone who’s ever mad-dogged me before. Sweat drips off my skin. My lungs burn. I let the pain wash over me. “Pain is weakness leaving the body,” as the saying goes. My physical body is strong.

But my heart? My mind?

How do I strengthen those two things?

I don’t know.

—Salvador Rosas, Thirsty

Sal is the narrator of my newest sexy contemporary romance Thirsty. He’s a former gangster who’s spent the last five years in prison for car jacking and grand theft auto. Even though Sal’s physical appearance is intimidating, his time in prison has left him introverted and prone to anxiety attacks in crowds.

Thirsty is the first book I’ve written entirely from the hero’s point of view (using first-person POV, in which the narrator is I and me). Spending so much time with Sal was both a challenge and a delight. Here are some of the things I observed during the process of writing Thirsty.

  1. Sharper voice. Writing from the hero’s point of view forced me to drop all the “writerly” tricks I’ve come to rely upon as a romance author. While I delight in lots of metaphors and descriptive words, Sal tells stories with very little embellishment. Sal has an education, but he doesn’t spend all day obsessing over words the way I do. The result? A sharper, more muscular voice better suited to telling this particular story.
  2. Surprises. Writing from Sal’s point of view revealed surprises about his personality that I hadn’t anticipated, as if listening more carefully to his voice created new opportunities for character development. For example, in trying to come up with ways for Sal to deal with his anxiety, I realized early on that he cleans whenever he is nervous or wants to show control over his environment. Subsequent research about formerly incarcerated individuals revealed that many inmates pass the time by obsessively cleaning their cells. This extreme cleanliness eventually became a feature of Sal’s character.
  3. Free traits. In my studies of character development, I happened upon the work of personality psychologist Brian Little. Little explores familiar traits like extroversion and introversion, but he also delves deeper into “free traits,” the temporary traits we adopt when we step out of character to face particular challenges. For example, an introverted person might behave like an extrovert in order to get better service for their loved one in a hospital emergency room. In Thirsty, Sal often has to adopt “free traits.” I explored Sal’s fears as he put aside his quiet nature and stood up in a spectacular way to defend his loved ones. I had the pleasure of capturing his turmoil when he put aside his desire for privacy to display affection in public towards his crush.

Romance authors regularly fall in love with their heroes. I am no exception. Sal is vulnerable and strong at the same time, a scarred survivor of his circumstances who finds a way out. I learned a lot from living inside his head, and I’m excited to share his voice with you.

About Thirsty

A gangster hiding from his past. A single mom fighting for her future. Can she show this bad boy the man he’s meant to be?
“Mia Hopkins is an imaginative author who doesn’t take the easy road to a formulaic book.”—USA Today’s Happy Ever After blog

My name is Salvador Rosas. Back in the barrio, my past is written on the walls: ESHB. Short for East Side Hollenbeck, my father’s gang—my gang. Hell, it’s a family tradition, one that sent both my brothers away. They used to call me “Ghost” because I haunted people’s dreams. Now I’ve got nothing going for me except a hipster gringo mentoring me in a new career. An ex-con making craft beer? No mames.

Still, people in this neighborhood look out for one another. That’s how I became Vanessa Velasco’s unwelcome tenant. Chiquita pero picosa. She’s little, but with curves so sweet they’re dangerous. I remember Vanessa from the old days, the straight-A student with big plans. Plans that were derailed by another kid stupid enough to think he was bulletproof. Now Vanessa knows better than to believe in empty promises. There’s fire in her . . . and if I touch her, I might get burned.

I’m trying everything I can to go straight. But when East Side Hollenbeck comes calling, I might have to risk it all to find out if there’s a future for Vanessa and me. Because she’s the only one who can quench my thirst for something real.

Praise for Thirsty

Manhattan antiquities appraiser Annalisse Drury dreams of a quiet life on the family farm among the sheep she loves, when her best friend is murdered. The police assume robbery is the motive because her friend’s expensive bracelet is missing. But the 500-year-old artifact is rumored to carry an ancient curse, one that unleashes evil upon any who dare wear the jewelry created for the Persian royal family—and Annalisse believes her friend is the latest victim.

Weeks later, Annalisse sees a necklace matching the stolen bracelet at a gallery opening. Convinced the necklace is part of the deadly collection, Annalisse begs the gallery’s owner to destroy the piece, but her pleas are ignored— despite the unnatural death that occurs during the opening. With two victims linked to the jewelry, Annalisse is certain she must act.

Desperate to keep the gallery owner safe, Annalisse reluctantly enlists the owner’s son to help—even though she’s afraid he’ll break her heart. Wealthy and devastatingly handsome, with a string of bereft women in his wake, Greek playboy Alec Zavos dismisses Annalisse’s concerns—until his parents are ripped from the Zavos family yacht during their ocean voyage near Crete.

Annalisse and Alec race across two oceans to save his mother, feared dead or kidnapped. As time lapses, the killer switches mode and closes in on the man who’s meant for Annalisse with the lifestyle she wants most.

But when it’s her turn as the hunted, will she choose to save Alec and his mother, or sacrifice everything to save herself?

Hold on for a heart-thumping adventure through exotic lands in this fast moving, romantic suspense mystery by Marlene M Bell.

Stolen Artifacts. Ancient Curse. Murder and Suspense…and Romance.

Annalisse Drury is a sheep-loving antiquities appraiser in New York.  Her best friend is murdered and she believes that the five century old bracelet that she was wearing might be the source of an ancient curse.

When she discovers an identical bracelet at a gallery opening, it thrusts her into a world of danger and intrigue with the gallery owner’s Greek playboy son, Alec Zavos.  As the two of them work together to save his parents and stop the killer, they become closer.

What starts off a little slow and cloudy turns into a wild high-speed ride of danger and mystery.  I found the blend of history, intrigue of ancient artifacts/curses – like an Indiana Jones adventure, and romance, quite satisfying.  Annalisse is a smart, likable heroine.  The plot twists and turns kept me turning pages and always guessing at who the murderer could be. A quite satisfying ending.

If you like a page-turner or a wild ride, I recommend STOLEN OBSESSION.

Leaving Everest by Megan Westfield

About the Book:

Twenty-year-old Emily Winslowe has had an adventurous upbringing. Daughter of a Himalayan mountain guide, she has climbed Mount Everest and other peaks most Americans only dream of. But for all her mountaineering prowess, she’s lacking some key experiences. Namely, guys. Especially one guy in particular—Luke Norgay, her childhood best friend who she hasn’t seen since he left for college in the United States two years ago.

Luke unexpectedly reappears as a guide just in time for the Everest climbing season. He’s even more handsome than she remembers, and that something that had been building between them during their last season together is back in front of them, bigger than ever.

The problem is, there’s a detail about Emily’s past that Luke doesn’t know. It’s the reason she ended up in the Himalayas in the first place…and the reason she must make it to the summit of Mount Everest this year. It’s also the reason she would never consider following him back to Washington after the climbing season ends.

But first, they’ll have to survive the mountain.

At birth, Mick Trewlove, the illegitimate son of a duke, was handed over to a commoner. Despite his lowly upbringing, Mick has become a successful businessman, but all his wealth hasn’t satisfied his need for revenge against the man who still won’t acknowledge him. What else can Mick do but destroy the duke’s legitimate son—and woo the heir’s betrothed into his own unloving arms . . .

Orphaned and sheltered, Lady Aslyn Hastings longs for a bit of adventure. With her intended often preoccupied, Aslyn finds herself drawn to a darkly handsome entrepreneur who seems to understand her so well. Surely a lady of her station should avoid Mick Trewlove. If only he weren’t so irresistible . . .

As secrets are about to be exposed, Mick must decide if his plan for vengeance is worth risking what his heart truly desires.

“Heath builds a community of fascinating, intertwined characters that readers will be eager to get to know as they cheer for the driven hero and the spunky, smart heroine.” — Publishers Weekly

“RITA Award–winner Heath’s new Sins for All Seasons series is off to an impressive start with an unforgettable, emotionally charged love story that will dazzle and delight readers with its exquisitely crafted characters, deliciously sensual romance, and impeccably rendered historical setting.” — Booklist/ *STARRED* Review

“For the first book in the Sins for All Seasons series, Heath returns to the world of dark London — a world she understands as well as Dickens. Heath illuminates the city’s underbelly with a powerful romance of healing and redemption. Her talents for drawing readers into the era with her well-drawn, three dimensional characters and realistic dialogue sets her novels apart. The unexpected twists and turns of the plot guarantees it will be placed on your keeper shelf.” — RT Book Reviews/ “Top Pick” Review

A satisfying story of love and revenge.
What is there NOT to love about this book!?! One of the best portrayals of a revenge romance trope I’ve ever read, wrapped up in a story of world where birthright means everything, and class distinction is never questioned.
Mick Trewlove is the bastard son of a duke, a man who sent him away to be raised as a commoner as an infant.  Despite his success in business, he still wants revenge against the man.  He plans to ruin the Duke’s legitimate son by stealing his fiance away.
Lady Aslyn Hastings has grown up as ward of the Duke, being orphaned in childhood.  She is betrothed to his son, and has always assumed this would be her fate, until she meets Mick Trewlove and finds herself unable to resist him.
Mick finds his plan at revenge at odds with his growing attraction to Lady Hastings.  He must decide whether love or revenge is most important, in the end.
I highly recommend BEYOND SCANDAL AND DESIRE to lovers of a well-written historical romance.  This story has everything you’d expect from a regency romance, as well as the excellent storytelling by Lorraine Heath.  Can’t wait to see what the rest of the series brings!

Lorraine Heath always dreamed of being a writer. After graduating from the University of Texas, she wrote training manuals, press releases, articles, and computer code, but something was always missing. When she read a romance novel, she not only became hooked on the genre, but quickly realized what her writing lacked: rebels, scoundrels, and rogues. She’s been writing about them ever since. Her work has been recognized with numerous industry awards, including RWA’s prestigious RITA. Her novels have appeared on the USA Today and New York Times bestseller lists.

Interview: Madison Michael, author of OUR LOVE IS HERE TO STAY

Untitled (1)

Why did you choose to write in your particular field or genre?

Initially I started writing romance because it was winter in Chicago. Seriously. I was afraid of cabin fever, so I signed up for two online classes – ‘Beginner Spanish’ and ‘How to Write a Romance Novel’. Sadly I didn’t get past Buenos Dias in Spanish class, but the writing stuck. I stayed with romance once I started there because I love reading romances, I love writing happy endings and steamy sex and because the fans are the best anywhere.

What do you think most characterizes your writing?

Chicago settings, elite society, smart, successful characters and hot sex and food. I like to write about food.

What do you like to read in your free time?

Like most author/entrepreneurs, my initial response is to ask “what free time?” In truth, I do take time every week for friends and family. I binge about three hours of news every night. Late at night I love to watch TV. Currently, I am binging Stranger Things and The Crown. And of course, Hallmark movies. Out in the world, I love to explore new restaurants, art museums and festivals, go to movies, and travel. Maybe I should ask when I find time to write!

What projects are you working on at the present?

I am completing my Beguiling Bachelor Series with the fourth book, Besotted, due out this summer. I am also putting the finishing touches on the first novella in my new B&B Billionaire Romance Series. The first of these, Desire & Dessert will come out this spring in a collection The Billionaire’s Club.

What do your plans for future projects include?

I have two more B&B Billionaire stories to write and then I want to explore historical romance a little bit. I am starting this month to blog four days per week instead of two – one dedicated specifically to Romance authors, three still aimed at readers. That should keep me busy all year and into 2019.

How many donuts are you capable of eating in one sitting?

OMG, I can answer this one but its embarrassing. I once sat in a two hour meeting and ate nine – yes you read that right – nine donuts! I wasn’t even aware I was doing it until I counted how many were left and realized what I had done. No one in the meeting said a word, but I am sure they all noticed.

How violently do you have to fight the urge to scream when you hear the ice cream truck coming?

No screaming – I just run out for ice cream.

What is your go-to method for getting rid of hiccups?

I hold my breath and say a Hail Mary. My roommate freshman year in college swore by this method and it usually does the trick. Of course, I am Jewish, so first she had to teach me a Hail Mary.

Do you have a favorite Girl Scout Cookie?

I love answering food questions Frozen, my favorite is a Thin Mint, at room temperature I prefer a Samoa.

Finally, and this one is important, so please pay attention What do you think cats dream about?

Food, like I do, and romping through fields of catnip.

This or That?

Dogs or Cats? Cats

Tea or Coffee? Both, depending on the time of day

Marvel or DC Comics? Marvel

Chocolate or Vanilla? Chocolate

Bond or Bourne? Bond

About the Book:

Can Love Transcend Time?

Thirty-year old Matthew Herrington is weary of solo nights in strange cities. He is ready for a change. And that is exactly what he gets when he steps into Swing Night at The Green Mill and is instantly immersed in the sights and sounds of another era. Intrigued by the club’s authenticity, Matthew is enchanted when he meets Patty, a mixture of sexy and sweet who steals his heart.

Patty Dennison has never met a man like Matthew in all her twenty-one years. A sophisticated man, he stands out from the usual Swing Night crowd. He is self-assured, smart, charming, and handsome as hell, even if he is a lousy dancer. Once he takes her in his arms, Patty is more than willing to give him a few dance lessons along with her heart.

Repeated missed dates and unanswered phone calls strain the relationship and frustrate the pair. But unraveling their mystery exposes an impossible scenario, one that will torment their sanity and test their love.

How can they make their fairytale last? Can love transcend time?

OLISHTS 1st Chap

A waitress came to take it off his hands. “Another?” she queried and he nodded agreement, placing a crumpled dollar on her tray. “Too much,” she told him shaking her head no. Matthew was surprised by her response but the tray was covered with loose change so he removed his bill and left the equivalent in quarters. Everything was so inexpensive but the server still needed to make a decent living.

She gave him a grateful smile and turned to move to her next customer, carefully balancing her tray above the heads of the young people around her. In the process, she nudged Matthew slightly causing him to lose his footing and fall gently against another body. Turning to apologize he found himself staring into the clearest, lightest blue eyes he had ever seen. He couldn’t look away.

“Sorry,” he mumbled when he finally regained his composure.

“That’s okay,” she replied with a quick, bright smile. She was lovely, in a wholesome girl next door way. She had her blond hair pulled into a ponytail that curled like a hair product ad, clear-skinned cheeks that were pink with warmth and perhaps exertion, and a curvy body displayed under a bright red sweater and a flared plaid skirt.

Matthew felt his mouth go dry and his palms get sweaty. She did something to him, this fresh faced woman that he found incredibly sexy. Her red lipstick was a slash of bright color mimicking the red of the sweater. Until this moment, bright red lipstick screamed “tough broad, stay away” to Matthew but on this girl it whispered “come hither.”

“Matthew,” he squeaked out, extending his hand to shake hers. Thinking twice about it, he retracted his arm, running his palm against his pants swiftly, and hopefully surreptitiously, before he extended his hand again.

“Patty,” she responded, placing her soft fingers in his large palm. She shook like a girl. After all the bone-breaking handshakes Matthew had endured across the globe, this limp, fingers-only shake surprised him. She looked athletic, not tough but toned, and not sickly pale like most Chicagoans in winter. The handshake didn’t match the image and normally would have bothered him. Nothing about Patty bothered him. Everything about her bothered him.

Aboutthebook (1)

All I’ve ever wanted was for someone to choose me. My mother didn’t. My father didn’t. The beautiful boy next door, who grew up to marry me, didn’t. Neither did the next man with whom I thought my heart was safe.

Back in the Bay area, three thousand miles from New York City, I can start fresh. Become one with the sea again, rise or fall on the tide of my own choices. But on the first day of my bright new life, the darkest shadows of my past follow me through my office door. The two men whose names are definitely not on my five-year plan.

If I let it consume me—my need for one man, my love for the other—the darkness will swallow me whole. I can’t let that happen. Not again. This time, the waves of emotion crashing against my heart won’t drown me. This time, I get to choose my happy ending.

It’s time to get back to the hotel. Fitz and I have been helping Hazel set up her apartment. Installing the sound system was the last thing on her list, and I’m almost done. But I don’t want this day to end. Not yet.

I don’t want to leave her.

I want to bask in the light of the infectiously cute smile she wears everywhere she goes.

I want to stay with her for the rest of the night.

Forever—if she allows it.

Hazel Beesley has been warming my cold soul since the moment I met her. She isn’t like any women I’ve come across. I met her the summer she came to live with her grandfather.

Everything about Hazel captured my heart from the beginning. Her big eyes, long braids, wicked smile and a smart mouth. Her luscious, full lips. The eagerness to learn and help people. Behind the professional hard shell she shows to the world, there’s a smart, sensitive, caring woman. She adores her family and helps everyone around her.

My relationship with her has been by stages. The big crush happened when I met her. Slowly, I fell in love with her, and one day, we kissed. In that instant, her air became mine, and my soul was branded with her name. Her presence calms the demons inside my head. She knows most of my secrets and my fears. Hazel held my hand while we face my most significant challenges.

My phone buzzes. It’s a text from Harrison, my oldest brother.

Harrison: Where are you?

Scott: San Francisco.

Harrison: Why am I not surprised? Are you and Hazel getting back together?

I snort. That’s the plan, but there’s a complication.

Scott: I’m working on it.

Harrison: If I could, I’d talk some reason into her, but … you fucked up, and I can’t help you.

No one can help me. I let out a long, frustrated breath. Harrison is her best friend. They are so similar. According to him, I have a hefty price to pay before she forgives me. Then, I must grovel, and maybe we will salvage something. At least, that’s what he said after Christmas.

Scott: It’s back to square one. I have to remind her how great we are together.

Harrison: That puzzles me. That the two of you fit just right. You are so different. And yet, you stayed together for a long time.

He’s right. On the surface, we don’t look compatible. However, deep down we fit perfectly. Like a key in its lock, I belong to her. It’s in the way she makes me feel. The yearning when she’s away. The joy I experience when she’s steps away from me. She holds the power in our relationship, not me.

Scott: I regret being a coward, and letting her slip out of my hands knowing that this day would come. The day she’d move back to San Francisco and see the boy she fell in love with since they were kids.

Harrison: Well, you better apply yourself before she sees him.

Jesus, I rub the back of my neck. What am I doing here?

Scott: This might be a lost battle. She already saw him.
